What is Person-Centred Counselling?
There are many different therapies available today. Some offer a quick fix, it can often feel like sticking a plaster on a gaping wound. Person-Centred is a talking therapy, it was developed from the work of the Psychologist Dr Carl Rogers, in the 1940’s. The idea was to move away from the perception that the Therapist was the expert and move towards the theory of the client finding fulfilment of their own personal potentials, guided and supported by the Therapist. The therapy is led by the client at their pace. It offers the possibilities, of looking at a much deeper level, in order to make changes. This can result in release from insecurities, anxieties and suffering.
No therapist can claim to be an expert on anyone, it is my role to understand your experiences from your point of view. I will support you in becoming more self-aware, confident and trusting of self, enabling you to find the answers to your own issues. I will be honest and genuine, this sometimes means I will gently and sympathetically challenge you where appropriate.
It works very much in the way of holding a mirror up, so you can begin to notice things about your way of being, how you respond, what makes you tick, what causes your insecurities. I will travel alongside you and offer insight and noticing of conflicting ideas or perceptions, you may have of yourself. As a Therapist, it is my responsibility to accept you without judgement, understand your feelings and not be drawn in by my own opinions. In offering a safe, confidential and accepting environment, it enables you to begin to re-connect with your inner values and self-worth. This is helpful in finding the right path for you to begin to move forward in a more positive way.
Walking Therapy is also available (sometimes an office/face to face environment doesn't suit everyone. It can often be helpful to combine therapy and exercise).
