What happens when I enter the counselling room?
After we make contact, we will meet at a suitable time for you. It is important to take enough time in order for you not to be rushing to and from the appointment. This time is precious for you and about you.
The first appointment is free. It gives an opportunity to ask any questions you may have, without eating in to your own valuable time, particularly if you have never had any experience of therapy before. The relationship between client and counsellor is so important and although trust takes time to develop, it is helpful for clients to get an initial insight as to how things may feel.
The first session is generally not too heavy. We will run through confidentiality, terms and an outline of the problem and what you want to get out of the sessions. Some clients feel an overwhelming need to tell their story straight away, particularly if it is something you have been holding on to, or been on your own with for a long time. The important thing to remember, is that you are in control of the sessions and we only go at your pace and what feels comfortable for you.
I ask for your patience, as this type of therapy is by no means a ‘quick fix’ and often due to the nature of what is being discussed, it can feel painful until we look at more positive ways of moving forward.
On a final note, I wish to tell you, I have been where you are, I have been the client. I understand how difficult it can be, to walk in the room for the first time, and tell your story to another person.
